Monday's rare level 4 risk for severe weather comes with chance for tornadoes, school closings
Monday is a WRAL Weather Alert Day. The severe threat is expected to begin mid-morning, while main-line storms are expected in the afternoon ahead of a cold front.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 3 of 5 (Enhanced) risk for severe weather across most of the region. This heightened risk suggests that the conditions will be conducive for stronger storms. By late evening and overnight, temperatures will drop rapidly by 30-40°F, leading to a swift transition from rain to snow.
Severe storms will be possible while many are sleeping.
Alabama schools have begun to announce closures or delays for Monday as the state prepares for possible widespread severe weather starting Sunday night. NOAA forecasters have added a Level 3 out of 5 risk for southeast Alabama and have maintained a separate Level 3 risk for the northwest corner of the state.
ABC 13 has issued a “Weather Alert Day” as a batch of strong storms will move across the entire ABC13 area on Monday.
Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Ashley Kramlich says a few isolated storms are possible this afternoon but the main line of storms will be coming in later tonight.
The National Weather Service on Sunday had increasing concern that widespread severe weather will affect Alabama starting later tonight. The Storm Prediction Center has increased the risk level for almost the entire state to Level 3 out of 5, or enhanced, in a forecast update on Sunday. Only coastal Alabama has a slightly lower risk, Level 2.
